A Run for the Wonderful

By Abraham Kline

Nothing says, "the holiday season is here", quite like running in the woods for 3.1 miles on a crisp winter morning. And for those who participated in the annual, It's a Wonderful 5K Run/Walk at Blue Spruce Park, that's exactly what it means.

The race was sponsored by the Gingerbreadman Running Company on Saturday, December 1, 2018. Registration began at 8:30 a.m. and folks were showing up bright and early to take part in this annual event. In the past, the event took place at night during the Festival of Lights. After the Festival of Lights was discontinued at Blue Spruce Park, this annual 5K was changed from an evening race to a morning race, now held at 10:00 AM on the first Saturday in December.

Approximately 125 runners and walkers showed up for the event. Registration ended at 9:45 a.m. and the race was officially in progress by 10 a.m. Following the race, an award ceremony, divided into age groups and overall placement, was held. One special award given was the "Most Wonderful Runner" award that went to the person who finished last.

Any race requires a large number of volunteer workers to make it a success. For several years, the event has received volunteers from the IUP Cross-Country team to help with registration, parking, setting up the course, and collecting racing chips at the end of the race. They also hand out water and set up food tables for participants.
