Are you one of the millions out there that love spoiling your fur babies? Do you have a picky pet that expects nothing but the best? Well then Midnight Izzy’s is your go-to store for all your pet supply needs! It is located at 331 West Main Street in Ligonier, PA, adjacent to Rolling Creek Primitives and Rosalie Jioio’s Little Italy.
Midnight Izzy’s is a delightful and friendly, pet supply store that is owned and operated by Joyce McKenzie. The business name originated from her Newfoundland, Midnight Isabella, that they call Izzy. Upon entering this adorable shop, it is obvious that Joyce has a great love for all things furry and four-legged. You will find everything possibly that you may need to care for or spoil your pets. The store provides pet lovers with a selection of high quality dog and cat foods, as well as locally hand-crafted pet accessories and treats that are exclusive to Midnight Izzy’s.
When asked how she competes with big chain stores, Joyce replied without hesitation, “We don’t try. Our goal is to be nothing like the big box stores. We are family owned and operated and we try to carry products that are also originated from family owned and operated suppliers, that don’t sell to chain stores, like Fromm Family Pet Foods.” Other things that set her apart from the chains, and local competition, is the exceptionally beautiful handcrafted artisan accessories and custom artwork that Joyce creates herself along with other local artists. From hand crafted paracord and leather collars and leads, to custom bandanas, bowties, and breed specific gifts, Midnight Izzy’s has it all, including, free local delivery!
Joyce is not only an animal lover, she is a Registered Nurse and a talented artist that
attended The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, so her passion for animals was not the only inspiration for founding Midnight Izzy’s, it was also out of love for her son. “Our son Sam is the youngest of five boys. He has Downs Syndrome and Autism and currently attends Clelian Heights School for Exceptional Children in Greensburg. We were unsure of what the future would hold for him once he graduates from Clelian, so we wanted to provide him with a safe place to help out when the time comes. He has already become skilled at assisting with stocking shelves and helping when we get deliveries, although, his favorite thing to do while he is here is to sit on the porch swing and color.” Joyce proudly carries Captain and Sandy dog biscuits made by the adults at the Clelian Center of which, all proceeds go to Clelian Heights, but also donates a portion of “Midnight Izzy’s” merchandise to ASA-WCC.
The McKenzie family also owns and operates McKenzie’s Service Center along with their
son Josh. Another of Joyce’s son’s, Nick, has a fiancé, Kaylee that takes turn’s overseeing the store when Joyce needs to spend time with Sam, or when volunteering at Clelian Heights Library, or subbing for Clelian Heights as a school nurse. Joyce stated that “it is very helpful that Kaylee and I can cover for each other when she needs to be with my Grandkids or I need to be with Sam.”
Looking into the future, Joyce contends that she is a Mom and Pop store and plans to keep it that way. She feels that there is a very cozy environment when you come into the Ligonier Shoppes on West Main Street and that is where she intends to stay. The building itself has some rooted Ligonier history, as well as the advantage of free parking right outside the door in a town that is mostly metered parking. In addition to these perks, she stated “Our customers, have become good friends, as well as all of the wonderful special kids we have met, and of course all of our furry friends.”
So if you’re in the mood to pamper your pooch or feline friend, stop by Midnight Izzy’s,
Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 5pm or Sunday 12 to 4pm. If you have any questions please give Joyce a call at 724-433-2831, and don’t forget to ask her about her custom artwork!
