The Lucky Dog Biscuit Company: Tasty Treats for Your Best Friend

BY APRIL SMYTH

Laura Guskiewicz has a special place in her heart for rescue dogs. She also has a love for baking! Her two beagles, Willow and Mona, were adopted from Action for Animals Humane Society in Latrobe, PA. They were the only beneficiaries of Laura’s homemade dog treats until friends and family encouraged Laura to share her passion for dogs and

baking by selling her treats.

In October 2017, The Lucky Dog Biscuit Company, LLC., was born. Laura creates treats for lucky dogs using healthy ingredients such as blueberries, bananas, cranberries, pumpkin, and sweet potato. Her wheat-free products are made in small batches with no preservatives. Available flavors include blueberry yogurt, coconut carob, cranberry sweet potato, peanut butter banana, and pumpkin.

Unfortunately, Mona passed away earlier this year. Laura recently adopted Lyddie from the Midwest Beagle Rescue, Education, and Welfare. Now, Willow and Lyddie are the

official taste testers for The Lucky Dog Biscuit Company.

They each give the treats two paws up!

Laura says she stands out against her competition by “adding a bit of whimsy to my treats. The peanut butter banana treats (my top seller) are usually in the shape of a shamrock in keeping with the theme of the Lucky Dog. However, they are cut into various shapes coinciding with the current holiday. I do not use any preservatives in my treats.”

Taking the leap into owning her own business has its challenges because Laura, a graduate of St. Vincent College class of 1993, is a full-time Certified Public Accountant

at a local firm. It’s sometimes difficult to balance a personal life, her career, and the business, but she loves hearing customers tell her that their otherwise picky dog

loves her treats!

When asked about the rewards, Laura reports, “I love seeing repeat customers and meeting new ones. I also have several customers who own dogs with allergies who are

able to eat my treats.” In the next few years, Laura would like to see the business

expand beyond Pennsylvania, continuing the mission of The Lucky Dog Biscuit Company to create healthy and tasty treats for lucky dogs. Currently, she operates her

business in the evenings and on weekends in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

Laura actively supports Action for Animals Humane Society in Latrobe and Cross Your Paws Rescue in Irwin. To purchase treats from The Lucky Dog Biscuit Company
